A Message from The Honourable Joan Marie Aylward, O.N.L., Lieutenant Governor of Newfoundland and Labrador, on International Women’s Day 2024

Today, on International Women’s Day, Newfoundlanders and Labradorians come together to celebrate the achievements of women in our province and their contributions, which make our province, our country, and the world a better place. Newfoundland and Labrador has so many women leaders, both past and present, that we celebrate every day. Our province has had more than its share of outstanding women leaders and matriarchs whose shoulders we stand upon today as we enjoy the many rights and freedoms because of their vigilance and advocacy, both inside and outside our homes.

As King Charles III’s representative in the province, it is my privilege to continue investing in women, raising them up, and bringing awareness to the challenges women continue to face in Newfoundland and Labrador. Together, we must champion equity and support the people in our community who work tirelessly to build a more inclusive, diverse, and empathetic society.

International Women’s Day is truly a time to reflect on the matriarchs in our lives. It is a time to stop and reflect on these role models, such as our mothers and grandmothers, and their impact on family.

It takes courage, strength, and vigilance to overcome existing barriers. I encourage and challenge all persons to think about issues affecting women and how we can create the change needed in homes, schools, and communities. Together, we can make a difference.

On this International Women’s Day, let’s commit to teaching all persons the importance of respect, kindness, and empathy for each other as we build a more inclusive society for all together.

Happy International Women’s Day.

Joan Marie J. Aylward, O.N.L.
Lieutenant Governor of Newfoundland and Labrador
