A Message from The Honourable Joan Marie Aylward, O.N.L., Lieutenant Governor of Newfoundland and Labrador, on the cancer diagnosis of His Majesty King Charles III

February 5, 2024

Carl and I, along with the people of Newfoundland and Labrador, send our healing thoughts and prayers to His Majesty King Charles III and Her Majesty Queen Camilla as His Majesty begins treatment for cancer.

As the representative of The King in Newfoundland and Labrador, I express my sincere gratitude for His Majesty’s commitment to making a positive impact on the lives of others through his service. His Majesty’s optimistic attitude, unwavering determination, and willingness to share his journey with cancer diagnosis are genuinely inspiring and comforting for all Newfoundlanders and Labradorians who may be fighting the disease or supporting someone who is.

This news comes a day after World Cancer Day, which highlights cancer risks and the importance of actions to better prevent, detect and treat the disease. His Majesty’s swift diagnosis was possible because of such efforts, and by speaking openly about his diagnosis, he has shed light on the importance of prevention and early detection.

The people of our province will keep His Majesty and the Royal Family in our thoughts during this time and wish him all the best throughout this healing process.

The Honourable Joan Marie Aylward, O.N.L.,
Lieutenant Governor of Newfoundland and Labrador
