King Charles III Coronation Medal

The Honourable Joan Marie Aylward, Lieutenant Governor of Newfoundland and Labrador, receiving the King Charles III Coronation Medal on May 6, 2024

Canada has created a medal to mark the coronation of His Majesty King Charles III on May 6, 2023. the King Charles III Coronation Medal was first awarded to Lieutenant Governors and Territorial Commissioners on May 6, 2024. Since that time, the medal has been awarded to many different Canadians, to recognize significant contributions to Canada, a province or territory, region, or community within Canada.

In all, 30,000 medals were created as part of this program, to be awarded by Lieutenant Governors and Territorial Commissioners, members of Parliament, Senators, the Canadian Armed Forces, the RCMP, and other community partners and organizations.

The Lieutenant Governor has awarded medals to deserving Newfoundlanders and Labradorians who have made our province a better place in which to live.

The front side of the medal (obverse) features a crowned image of His Majesty King Charles III wearing coronation robes. Around the effigy appears the text, “CHARLES III DEI GRATIA REX” (Charles III, by the Grace of God, the King) and “CANADA.”

The reverse of the medal portrays the Royal Cypher (the monogram surmounted by the Canadian Royal Crown), over the sunburst design of the Canadian Coronation emblem.

The date of the Coronation is inscribed on the left side of the medal. “VIVAT REX,” meaning “long live The King,” is inscribed on the right side.

The medal is attached to a ribbon using an arrangement of dark blue, bright red and white, identical to the United Kingdom’s Coronation Medal ribbon.

The inaugural medal presentation was to Ms. Mary Hodder, at a private ceremony in Marystown on September 12, 2024.
