Unveiling of NL’s First Heart Garden in the Spirit of Reconciliation

Her Honour, The Lieutenant Governor of Newfoundland and Labrador, Judy M. Foote, P.C., O.N.L., and His Honour, Howard W. Foote, invite the public to come together in the spirit of reconciliation at the unveiling of Newfoundland and Labrador’s first Heart Garden on the grounds of Government House on Friday, June 21st, 2019, at 1:00 pm.

June 21st is National Indigenous Peoples Day. The ceremony will bring together representatives of Indigenous and non-Indigenous groups, including community leaders and students for the unveiling of the the province’s first Heart Garden.

The Heart Garden is in memory of all Indigenous children who were lost to the residential school system, in recognition of those who survived, and the families of both. The inaugural “Honouring Memories, Planting Dreams” Heart Garden event took place at Rideau Hall as part of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada’s closing ceremonies in 2015. Since then Heart Gardens have been planted throughout the country and will now include one in Newfoundland and Labrador on the grounds of Government House.
